The Best Keyword is Not One Word

Maybe it's a misconception based on SEOs telling clients they need to rank highly in Google for certain keywords. So if you're talking about keywords, that means you're trying to rank for several one-word search terms, right? Wrong.

It's hard to believe, but a number of site owners still make this mistake. Or maybe it's not so hard to believe, as new people come into this business all the time. You set up a website selling all kinds of widgets, and you want to corner the market, so you work as hard as you can to get to the top of Google for the keyword “widget.” Maybe you also want to get to the top for “widgets,” because you figure some people will want to buy more than one.

If you do that, you're going to run into all sorts of trouble. I hardly know where to begin, but let's start with the search engine itself. Presumably you're trying to rank in Google or Bing (or both). On their default settings, whenever someone does a search, the first page shows the top ten matches, the second page the next ten, and so on. Many searchers don't go past the first page; most searchers don't look past the first three pages. That means you need to beat the top 30 pages that are already ranking for “widgets.”

This is not easy. If you're new to the widgets business – and I'm assuming your website is brand new, at any rate – you're competing against widget sellers and manufacturers who've been at it for years, maybe even decades. They have older, larger websites with tons of content, all of it optimized for “widgets.” That's a lot of momentum you need to overcome.

Actually, it's even worse than that. Those top 30 pages already beat tons of other pages to the top of Google, so you're also going to have to beat all of the pages that THEY beat. Don't believe me? Just pop the word “golf” into Google and see how many pages are competing for that single word. Do you really want to compete with nearly one and a half billion web pages?

You might be able to pull it off if your company is Maytag and you're trying to land the term “washer.” If you managed it in that case, though, it would be because Maytag boasts one heck of a reputation – to say nothing of the kind of money and other resources it takes to compete for a one-word keyword. For most of us, it's way too expensive. There's no good reason to put in that kind of investment in a one-word keyword...especially when you can get a much better return on your investment with a different approach.

You see, the dirty little secret of one-word keywords is that they don't actually perform as well as you might think they do, given the amount of competition for them. If you think about it, this stands to reason. If you're trying to be seen for the keyword “widgets,” you're hoping to attract people searching for all kinds of widgets: blue widgets, red widgets, cheap widgets, premium widgets, deluxe widgets, electronic widgets, solar-powered widgets, OSHA-compliant widgets, free widgets, sexy widgets, widgets with attached doohickeys...the list goes on. And you probably only supply a few of those kinds of widgets, so you may get lots of traffic, but the vast majority will look, see that you don't sell the kind of widget they're looking for, and leave.

Also, if you're trying to rank for the keyword “widget” because you sell them, you're going to attract people who aren't interested in buying any widgets at all. Sure, there's the group that's looking for free widgets, but there are others. What about the folks who don't know what widgets are, and just want to find out? Or the people with broken widgets who want to get them repaired? Or the ones who have found some vintage widgets in Grandma's attic and want to know what they're worth?

SEOs and smart site owners try to rank for three- and four-word key phrases. Savvy searchers tend to use longer key phrases because they want something that's precisely relevant to their needs; someone who wants to get their widget fixed will search for “widget repair” and probably include their geographical location in the search box. They won't search for “new widgets” or even “used widgets” unless they're looking for a higher limit on how much to spend on repairing their widget. So longer key phrases often indicate a searcher's intent, and SEOs take advantage of this by trying to rank for phrases used by searchers whose intentions are in line with what their sites can offer. For this reason, longer key phrases often outperform single-word keywords, even though single-word keywords might attract more traffic.

To sum up, single-word keywords are incredibly difficult and expensive to win, attract too broad a range of traffic, and as a consequence do not convert well. If you're thinking about ranking for single-word keywords, you need to step back and reconsider what your website is all about. Work on the specifics. What do you want people to do when they get to your website? What do you have to offer them? Once you've figured out the specific kind of widget (or widget service) you provide, put that right up front so you'll attract the widget hunters who want what you have. Use several words, even if it's something like “affordable luxury vintage widgets” (just look at all the pre-owned Lexus and Mercedes dealers!). Official: Google Panda 2.3 Update Is Live

Google has confirmed to Search Engine Land that late last week it pushed out a small update to the Panda filter.

“We’re continuing to iterate on our Panda algorithm as part of our commitment to returning high-quality sites to Google users,” a Google spokesperson told us. “This most recent update is one of the roughly 500 changes we make to our ranking algorithms each year,” the spokesperson added.

Over the past week or so, I have been tracking the complaints in the various forums, including the large ongoing thread at WebmasterWorld.

At first, I felt the complaints suggested that Google was doing rolling updates of Panda, as opposed Panda updates being manually pushed out. I was wrong, they are still being pushed put manually, Google says.

Google told us “this update incorporates some new signals that help differentiate between higher- and lower-quality sites. As a result, some sites are ranking higher after this most recent update.”

Previous Panda Updates
So far, the Panda update schedule has been like this:

Panda Update 1.0: Feb. 24, 2011
Panda Update 2.0: April 11, 2011 (about 7 weeks later)
Panda Update 2.1: May 10, 2011 (about 4 weeks later)
Panda Update 2.2: June 16, 2011 (about 5 weeks later)
Panda Update 2.3: July 23, 2011 (about 5 weeks later)
The 2.1 to 2.3 dates are approximate. Google may have rolled them out just a bit earlier or later than those exact days. The bigger issue is that you can see a trend developing. About every month, Google reruns its Panda algorithm.

Each time Panda is run, there’s a chance some hit from the last update will improve, while other sites might see traffic drops. In between updates, changes people may make specifically in hopes of fixing a Panda problem won’t show any impact until the next update is run.

Yahoo Site Explorer Merging with MWT

Say good-bye to Yahoo Site Explorer. The essential tool for webmasters looking to optimize for the Yahoo search engine seems to have become redundant. Both Microsoft and Yahoo stated that YSE will be shut down later this year, and encouraged switching to Microsoft Webmaster Tools.
In a post on Yahoo's search blog, Herman Minocha, the product manager for Yahoo Site Explorer, acknowledged that a year ago his company said that they would continue to support and extend the service, even after completing the transition to Mhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gificrosoft-powered searches. However, after input from users and the team from Bing Webmaster Central, the companies realized that “Having two webmaster portals for a single source for organic results does not add enough value,” Minocha noted.

So when, exactly, will this shutdown take place? Minocha says that it will happen “once all markets are transitioned” to the the Microsoft Search platform. He gives no more specific date than “later this year,” but notes that the search blog will continue to update readers on the status of the transition...Read More..

In the meantime, Minocha says that webmasters should start using Bing Webmaster Center, but they don't need to stop using Yahoo Site Explorer just yet. “In a large part of the world, we have not yet transitioned” to the Microsoft search platform, Minocha explained, so “to continue to receive relevant organic traffic from Yahoo! Search results, we encourage you to continue using Site Explorer as you have in the past until we fully switch over.”

If you didn't see the writing on the wall for the Yahoo search engine, this is the clearest indication yet that it will cease to have a separate existence. In fact, Minocha explicitly states that webmasters will not need to optimize separately for the Yahoo and Bing search engines in the future. That will happen as soon as this year, when Yahoo's organic results are completely powered by Bing in all parts of the world.

While this event will simplify search engine optimization for many people, it's hard to see Yahoo fade away without mixed feelings. Much older than Bing, and several years older than Google, Yahoo stayed relevant as a search site much longer than earlier entries to the field, such as Excite, Lycos, and even Ask. Once the transition to Bing-powered results is complete, will the combined Microsoft-Yahoo search engine become a stronger competitor to Google, or will the combination simply fall victim to the search behemoth's competitive strength as so many others have before? There's no telling, but even if it does, Yahoo will probably continue to exist as a source of news and various information, as its associated sites and services still see a huge amount of traffic.

If you're using the Site Explorer APIs, your extensions are running out. Yahoo had intended to shut those down at the end of last year, but extended the deadline. Those will now be closed on September 15, 2011. The old BOSS Site Explorer APIs shut down yesterday, but there's good news, according to a recent Yahoo blog post; apparently, there's a new BOSS in town, BOSS V2, which you can explore here.

URL parameters

Google’s goal is to crawl your site as efficiently as possible. Crawling and indexing pages with identical content is an inefficient use of our resources. It can limit the number of pages we can crawl on your site, and duplicate content in our index can hinder your pages' performance in our search results. Duplicate content often occurs when sites make the same content available via different URLs—for example, by using session IDs or other parameters, like this:

http://www.example.com/products/women/dresses/green.htm
http://www.example.com/products/women?category=dresses&color=green
http://example.com/shop/index.php?product_id=32&highlight=green+dress&cat_id=1&sessionid=123&affid=431
In this case, all these URLs point to the same content: a collection of real green dresses.

When Google detects duplicate content, such as variations caused by URL parameters, we group the duplicate URLs into one cluster and select what we think is thehttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif "best" URL to represent the cluster in search results. We then consolidate properties of the URLs in the cluster, such as link popularity, to the representative URL. Consolidating properties from duplicates into one representative URL often provides users with more accurate search results.

To improve this process, we recommend using the parameter handling tool to give Google information about how to handle URLs containing specific parameters. Validation: measuring and tracking code quality

Google’s Webmaster Team is responsible for most of Google’s informational websites like Google’s Jobs site or Privacy Centers. Maintaining tens of thousands of pages and constantly releasing new Google sites requires more than just passion for the job: it requires quality management.

In this post we won’t talk about all the different tests that can be run to analyze a website; instead we’ll just talk about HTML and CSS validation, and tracking quality over time.

Why does validation matter? There are different perspectives on validation—at Google there are different approaches and priorities too—but the Webmaster Team considers validation a baseline quality attribute. It doesn’t guarantee accessibility, performance, or maintainability, but it reduces the number of possible issues that could arise and in many cases indicates appropriate use of technology.

While paying a lot of attention to validation, we’ve developed a system to use it as a quality metric to measure how we’re doing on our own pages. Here’s what we do: we give each of our pages a score from 0-10 points, where 0 is worst (pages with 10 or more HTML and CSS validation errors) and 10 is best (0 validation errors). We started doing this more than two years ago, first by taking samples, now monitoring all our pages.

Since the beginning we’ve been documenting the validation scores we were calculating so that we could actually see how we’re doing on average and where we’re headed: is our output improving, or is it getting worse?

Here’s what our data say:

On average there are about three validation issues per page produced by the Webmaster Team (as we combine HTML and CSS validation in the scoring process, information about the origin gets lost), down from about four issues per page two years ago.

This information is valuable for us as it tells us how close we are to our goal of always shipping perfectly valid code, and it also tells us whether we’re http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifon track or not. As you can see, with the exception of the 2nd quarter of 2009 and the 1st quarter of 2010, we are generally observing a positive trend.

What has to be kept in mind are issues with the integrity of the data, i.e. the sample size as well as “false positives” in the validators. We’re working with the W3C in several ways, including reporting and helping to fix issues in the validators; however, as software can never be perfect, sometimes pages get dinged for non-issues: see for example the border-radius issue that has recently been fixed. We know that this is negatively affecting the validation scores we’re determining, but we have no data yet to indicate how much.

Although we track more than just validation for quality control purposes, validation plays an important role in measuring the health of Google’s informational websites.

SEO Tips & SEO Techniques

Small businesses are growing more aware of the need to understand and implement at least the basics of search engine optimization. But if you read a variety of small businesses blogs and Web sites, you’ll quickly see that there’s a lot of uncertainty over what makes up “the basics.” Without access to high-level consulting and without a lot of experience knowing what SEO resources can be trusted, there’s also a lot of misinformation about SEO strategies and tactics.

This article is the second in a two-part SEO checklist specifically for small business owners and webmasters. Last week, I shared 20 “don’ts.” Naturally, this week addresses the “Do’s”—things to make sure you include whether you’re hiring an SEO company or doing it yourself.

Small Business SEO Checklist: The Do’s

1. Commit yourself to the process. SEO isn’t a one-time event. Search engine algorithms change regularly, so the tactics that worked last year may not work this year. SEO requires a long-term outlook and commitment.

2. Be patient. SEO isn’t about instant gratification. Results often take months to see, and this is especially true the smaller you are, and the newer you are to doing business online.

3. Ask a lot of questions when hiring an SEO company. It’s your job to know what kind of tactics the company uses. Ask for specifics. Ask if there are any risks involved. Then get online yourself and do your own research—about the company, about the tactics they discussed, and so forth.

4. Become a student of SEO. If you’re taking the do-it-yourself route, you’ll have to become a student of SEO and learn as much as you can. Luckily for you, there are plenty of great Web resources (like Search Engine Land) and several terrific books you can read. Aaron Wall’s SEO Book, Jennifer Laycock’s Small Business Guide to Search Engine Marketing, and Search Engine Optimization: An Hour a Day by Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin are three I’ve read and recommend.

5. Have web analytics in place at the start. You should have clearly defined goals for your SEO efforts, and you’ll need web analytics software in place so you can track what’s working and what’s not.

6. Build a great web site. I’m sure you want to show up on the first page of results. Ask yourself, “Is my site really one of the 10 best sites in the world on this topic?” Be honest. If it’s not, make it better.

7. Include a site map page. Spiders can’t index pages that can’t be crawled. A site map will help spiders find all the important pages on your site, and help the spider understand your site’s hierarchy. This is especially helpful if your site has a hard-to-crawl navigation menu. If your site is large, make several site map pages. Keep each one to less than 100 links. I tell clients 75 is the max to be safe.

8. Make SEO-friendly URLs. Use keywords in your URLs and file names, such as yourdomain.com/red-widgets.html. Don’t overdo it, though. A file with 3+ hyphens tends to look spammy and users may be hesitant to click on it. Related bonus tip: Use hyphens in URLs and file names, not underscores. Hyphens are treated as a “space,” while underscores are not.

9. Do keyword research at the start of the project. If you’re on a tight budget, use the free versions of Keyword Discovery or WordTracker, both of which also have more powerful paid versions. Ignore the numbers these tools show; what’s important is the relative volume of one keyword to another. Another good free tool is Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool, which doesn’t show exact numbers.

10. Open up a PPC account. Whether it’s Google’s AdWords or Yahoo’s Search Marketing or something else, this is a great way to get actual search volume for your keywords. Yes, it costs money, but if you have the budget it’s worth the investment. It’s also the solution if you didn’t like the “Be patient” suggestion above and are looking for instant visibility.

11. Use a unique and relevant title and meta description on every page. The page title is the single most important on-page SEO factor. It’s rare to rank highly for a primary term (2-3 words) without that term being part of the page title. The meta description tag won’t help you rank, but it will often appear as the text snippet below your listing, so it should include the relevant keyword(s) and be written so as to encourage searchers to click on your listing. Related bonus tip: You can ignore the Keywords meta altogether if you’d like; it’s close to inconsequential. If you use it, put misspellings in there, and any related keywords that don’t appear on the page.

12. Write for users first. Google, Yahoo, etc., have pretty powerful bots crawling the web, but to my knowledge these bots have never bought anything online, signed up for a newsletter, or picked up the phone to call about your services. Humans do those things, so write your page copy with humans in mind. Yes, you need keywords in the text, but don’t stuff each page like a Thanksgiving turkey. Keep it readable.

13. Create great, unique content. This is important for everyone, but it’s a particular challenge for online retailers. If you’re selling the same widget that 50 other retailers are selling, and everyone is using the boilerplate descriptions from the manufacturer, this is a great opportunity. Write your own product descriptions, using the keyword research you did earlier (see #9 above) to target actual words searchers use, and make product pages that blow the competition away. Plus, retailer or not, great content is a great way to get inbound links.

14. Use your keywords as anchor text when linking internally. Anchor text helps tells spiders what the linked-to page is about. Links that say “click here” do nothing for your search engine visibility.

15. Build links intelligently. Submit your site to quality, trusted directories such as Yahoo, DMOZ, Business.com, Aviva, and Best of the web. Seek links from authority sites in your industry. If local search matters to you (more on that coming up), seek links from trusted sites in your geographic area—the Chamber of Commerce, etc. Analyze the inbound links to your competitors to find links you can acquire, too.

16. Use press releases wisely. Developing a relationship with media covering your industry or your local region can be a great source of exposure, including getting links from trusted media web sites. Distributing releases online can be an effective link building tactic, and opens the door for exposure in news search sites. Related bonus tip: Only issue a release when you have something newsworthy to report. Don’t waste journalists’ time.

17. Start a blog and participate with other related blogs. Search engines, Google especially, love blogs for the fresh content and highly-structured data. Beyond that, there’s no better way to join the conversations that are already taking place about your industry and/or company. Reading and commenting on other blogs can also increase your exposure and help you acquire new links. Related bonus tip: Put your blog at yourdomain.com/blog so your main domain gets the benefit of any links to your blog posts. If that’s not possible, use blog.yourdomain.com.

18. Use social media marketing wisely. If your small business has a visual element, join the appropriate communities on Flickr and post high-quality photos there. If you’re a service-oriented business, use Yahoo Answers to position yourself as an expert in your industry. With any social media site you use, the first rule is don’t spam! Be an active, contributing member of the site. The idea is to interact with potential customers, not annoy them.

19. Take advantage of local search opportunities. Online research for offline buying is a growing trend. Optimize your site to catch local traffic by showing your address and local phone number prominently. Write a detailed Directions/Location page using neighborhoods and landmarks in the page text. Submit your site to the free local listings services that the major search engines offer. Make sure your site is listed in local/social directories such as CitySearch, Yelp, Local.com, etc., and encourage customers to leave reviews of your business on these sites, too.

20. Take advantage of the tools the search engines give you. Sign up for Google’s webmaster Central and Yahoo’s Site Explorer to learn more about how the search engines see your site, including how many inbound links they’re aware of.

21. Diversify your traffic sources. Google may bring you 70% of your traffic today, but what if the next big algorithm update hits you hard? What if your Google visibility goes away tomorrow? Newsletters and other subscriber-based content can help you hold on to traffic/customers no matter what the search engines do. In fact, many of the DOs on this list—creating great content, starting a blog, using social media and local search, etc.—will help you grow an audience of loyal prospects and customers that may help you survive the whims of search engines.

With this checklist and last week’s list of “Don’ts,” you should be able to develop a good plan of attack for your SEO efforts for your small business.

Keyword Density: Keyword density is an indicator of the number of times the selected keyword appears in a web page. But mind you, keyword shouldn’t be over used, but should be just sufficient enough to appear at important places.

Bounce Rate: The bounce rate is the percentage of visits that come to the site and only view one page. This is a good metric to have as you can then determine how popular your site is as well as how effective (or not effective) your navigation is.
